The Philadelphia Eagles have finalized their 53-man roster, which took quite a long time, but it still faces criticism from the fan base.
One of the hottest topics from the finalized roster is what the Eagles decided on with the quarterbacks. They decided to keep Jalen Hurts, Andy Dalton, Tanner McKee, and Cole Payton on the active roster.
This was a controversial decision by the Eagles, especially since they released so many good players. Unfortunately for the Eagles, though, they forced themselves into this situation.
How the Eagles forced themselves into carrying four quarterbacks in 2026
After the Eagles selected Payton in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, many fans were wondering how they would handle the QB position after also trading for Dalton prior to that. Roseman made his thoughts clear on carrying four quarterbacks.
“We talked about it: We’re open to carrying four quarterbacks, for sure,” Roseman said. “If you talk about it being the most important position in sports and you have four good ones, why wouldn’t you keep them?”
Roseman said it months ago and Eagles fans didn't believe him. Well, they do now.
The moment the Eagles made that trade for Dalton, everyone knew there was going to be a problem at quarterback. Dalton and McKee were going to battle for a job that shouldn't have been one in the first place.
OTAs only caused more problems within the Eagles roster after the struggles of Dalton and McKee. It didn't get much better in training camp, with both guys being inconsistent.
Then preseason happened and Dalton looked bad the first two games. All of a sudden against the Cincinnati Bengals, he played much better and got the conversation going about him staying.
McKee wasn't that much better in the preseason either. He struggled in the first and third games, but shined with two touchdowns against the New England Patriots.
If the Eagles had just stuck it out with McKee as the backup, this mess wouldn't have happened. Now that it is happening, the Eagles have lost some key depth players.
They are running the risk of losing Joshua Weru and Uar Bernard to the waiver wire. Running back Carson Steele was a standout, but still couldn't make the team.

This is a roster mess that could have been avoided if the Eagles had just gone with McKee and Payton as the backups. Now, the Eagles have four quarterbacks taking up spots with way more questions about the position and the roster than expected.
