The mystery of the QB2 job for the Philadelphia Eagles is officially over, as Andy Dalton was named the backup over Tanner McKee.
Philly confirmed the news when they released the inactive list for their Week 1 game against the Washington Commanders. Here is the full inactive list for the Eagles:
- Tanner McKee, QB3
- Cole Payton, QB
- Elijah Moore, WR
- Jonathan Greenard, EDGE
- Micah Morris, OG
Eagles name Andy Dalton as the backup over Tanner McKee
The preseason didn't make the QB2 decision any easier, as Dalton and McKee struggled during the three games and training camp. Even as far back as OTAs, the Eagles saw both quarterbacks struggle with consistency.
McKee was the backup for the Eagles last season, but Dalton has come in and taken the job. The Eagles' fans think they're choosing Dalton over McKee. Over the last few weeks, though, it has felt like the coaching staff wanted Dalton.
Dalton didn't give Eagles fans much confidence in the first two preseason games, but he showed signs of being a solid backup in the last game against the Cincinnati Bengals. McKee's best game was in Week 2 against the New England Patriots.
There is an interesting question as to whether this is going to be the case the whole season or not. It feels as though Dalton has won the job and will backup Jalen Hurts in 2026.
The Eagles have other key players out for the Week 1 game
Greenard was ruled out of the game on Friday in the Eagles' final injury report. He has been dealing with a pectoral injury that appears to still be a problem despite practicing throughout the week.
The Eagles will be rolling with Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith Jr. as the starting edge rushers over Greenard. This was an expected outcome for the Eagles and could carry into Week 1.
Moore was a noteworthy name to see on the inactive list for the Eagles. He was part of a very deep and new-look wide receiver room for Philly.

Philly finally has the QB2 mystery behind them and have the roster they need for the Commanders game. Whether this will pay off for them is another question they will have to answer during the game. Even with the chaos at quarterback, the Eagles should have everything they need as solid insurance policies for Hurts.
