It's been a long coaching road for Vic Fangio, and as great as it has been, the story continues. The Philadelphia Eagles' defensive coordinator has previously noted he is satisfied with where he is.
A former NFL head coach of the Denver Broncos (2019-2021), following early coaching stints in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, Milford Academy, and Chapel Hill at North Carolina, Vic's first professional coaching job came in Philly with the USFL's Stars in 1984.
Fast forward to the present, and it feels as though his coaching career will end where it began. He returned as a consultant in 2022 but accepted the defensive coordinator's chair this season.
He was run out of town in Miami after only a single season. Apparently, some Dolphins didn't appreciate his old-school coaching style. Philly's players, both old and young accepted him. The result? Philly finished ranked first in total defense. How do you like us now Fins?
Detroit's Ben Johnson wins the AP Assistant Coach of the Year Award over Vic Fangio.
Fangio was nominated by the Associated Press as a finalist for the Assistant Coach of the Year Award. He didn't win. The honor was announced during the NFL Network's broadcast of the red carpet pre-show and instead given to former Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson.
Following the season Ben Johnson and the Lions enjoyed, anyone who loses a postseason award has nothing to hang his head about. This doesn't change or reconfirm anything we already knew though. No one who loves the Eagles needs to be convinced of how valuable Vic has been.
He's still the winner in our book.
Hopefully, he'll win a Super Bowl ring as a very satisfactory consolation prize. Philly battles the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, and Fangio's unit will have a huge say in how the outcome unfolds.
