Eagles news: 3 roster moves in 24 hours, a legend is now a Hall-of-Fame finalist
You'd think we'd be used to this demolition derby we refer to as the NFL by now. We aren't. It's never fun to see guys get injured. Brandon Graham was continuing his climb up the ladder of all-time sack leaders. He went down. Now, we're asking if his time with the Philadelphia Eagles is over
Ben VanSumeren doesn't have Brandon Graham's resume, but he was someone we liked rooting for. An undrafted addition after the 2023 NFL Draft, he worked his way onto Philly's roster as a reserve linebacker and special teamer. This year, we found out he's a damn good fullback.
VanSumeren's recent trip to the injured reserve ends his season, but again, he's long earned his wings in our book. As we closed the book on another Tuesday, the first of five in December, his exit has left the door open for an unusual signing.
Eagles roster news: Philly signs a real fullback.
What do you know? Fullbacks aren't extinct! The Birds signed one on Tuesday, a real one. This one is Khari Blasingame. He's a former undrafted rookie free agent from the mighty Vanderbilt Commodores, the same program that gave us Jordan Matthews.
Blasingame spent time with the Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Chicago Bears. He'll be added to Philly's practice squad. A former first-rounder was released in a subsequent move.
More Eagles news: Philadelphia releases two wide receivers in as many days.
Khari Blasingame's acquisition means someone has to be released from the scout team. This time, John Ross is the casualty. This comes about 23 hours after Philly announced they had released Parris Campbell. The latter has appeared in five Eagles games and has caught six passes for 30 yards. He has also scored a receiving TD.
So, while that's it for Ross and Campbell for now, we'll leave the door cracked. Something tells us they may be back again.
When the Birds play musical chairs with the lineup, they typically bring back guys they're familiar with. We could see one or both back on the scout team soon.
Even more Eagles news (this is big): Maxie Baughan is a Hall of Fame seniors finalist.
Maxie Baughan was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 2015. Now, he has a shot to have his bust carved and placed in Canton.
He was voted onto five Pro Bowl rosters during his six seasons with the Eagles. He's now one of five finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's combined contributor, coach and senior committee category.
Baughan made nine total Pro Bowls. He was a First-Team All-Pro in 1964 and a Second-Team All-Pro on six other occasions. Chuck Bednarik is the only Eagles linebacker to earn more Pro Bowl nods than Baughan (Bednarik made seven). Only six linebackers in NFL History have made more Pro Bowls than Baughan. We'll be pulling for the legend to be enshrined.
