Just one day before the Philadelphia Eagles take the field for their preseason matchup against the New England Patriots, they decide to make a series of moves that include a much-talked-about former draft pick.

The Eagles announced they have waived wide receiver Johnny Wilson with an injury designation. They also signed center Zeke Correll and wide receiver Brandon Hayes and placed cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields on the Injured Reserve List.

Wilson was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Eagles. He played in 16 games that year, catching five of 15 passes for 38 yards and one touchdown. Wilson did not play last year after tearing his ACL in training camp.

Eagles say goodbye to Johnny Wilson, but his roster status was never secure

Last year during training camp, Wilson was actually off to a very good start. His hands had improved, and he looked like a guy who would be the fifth receiver in the offense. That ACL injury really derailed his progress, and he never recovered.

Instead, Darius Cooper emerged last year as an undrafted rookie and won that final spot on the 53-man roster. Cooper has been a star again at training camp and could be in the running to start in 2026.

The reality is that Wilson had a tall task entering training camp. He was battling with Cooper and Elijah Moore for the final spot or two in the wide receiver room. Cooper and Moore have built a good rapport with quarterback Jalen Hurts, so the writing was on the wall for Wilson.

As for what happens now for the 6-foot-6 wide receiver, it appears that he got hurt again, which means he needs to get healthy and try to get back on the roster. He has the talent to compete for a roster spot, but durability is becoming a problem.

Philly moves on and now has a clearer picture of how the 53-man roster is going to look at wide receiver. Cooper feels like a lock at this point, and Moore's chances just skyrocketed to make the team.

Ultimately, the Eagles did what was best for the team and needed to add depth elsewhere, and Wilson was getting injured too often. Hopefully, he will be able to find his way onto another NFL roster because he is good enough to play in this league.
