Eagles' Sean Mannion is doomed to repeat Kevin Patullo's mistake if he stays stubborn

Philadelphia Eagles fans are really trying to help Sean Mannion, but his stubbornness could lead to the same outcome as Kevin Patullo's if he isn't smart about it.

The Eagles have a clear problem with the screen pass. Specifically, they're trying to get the ball into rookie first-round pick Makai Lemon's hands behind the line of scrimmage, and that never works. Lemon had -5 yards receiving in Week 1 because of it.

One request from the fan base is that Mannion stop doing it, but it remains to be seen whether he follows through. Suppose he doesn't; enjoy unemployment because it's not working. At all.

Here's an incredibly frustrating stat for Eagles fans: Philly's offense has eight passing attempts from behind the line of scrimmage, and they've gained -6 yards on them. Yes, that is by a mile the worst in the NFL.

Mannion spoke with the media on Wednesday and was asked about the screen game and whether he would move away from it. He has no intention of doing it.

“I think we’re close on a few of them,” Mannion told reporters on Wednesday via NJ.com's Cayden Steele. “I think there’s some fundamental things to clean up a little bit. I think we had a couple that were fundamental based, a couple that were just execution based, but the screen game’s going to be a big part of what we do and called a couple of them that were close and a couple that I think will across the season be more productive plays moving forward.”

Last year, Patullo ran the ball on first and second down, then stuck with those million hitch routes all game, and it did nothing on offense. He did that all season, knowing that they didn't work.

That stubbornness ended Patullo's incredibly short offensive coordinator career in the NFL. The Eagles finished in the bottom 15 in every major offensive statistical category, including total yards, rushing, passing, and scoring.

This doesn't mean Mannion has to abandon the screen game altogether, but it clearly isn't working and needs practice. Maybe they don't have the right personnel on the field. Putting Darius Cooper out there would be big, since he's a good blocker.

Ultimately, Mannion is setting his team up for failure because they are getting behind on downs as a result. He has to come up with other creative ideas to move the ball because this isn't working right now.

Eagles fans will have to see how it plays out, but right now, Mannion is trending in a direction that he doesn't need to be going down. Patullo learned the hard way what happens if he doesn't make the adjustments he needs to. Mannion hopefully will figure out his mistake before it all ends with him getting the pink slip after the season.
