For a position group under the microscope since veteran Reed Blankenship's departure, the Philadelphia Eagles' safety group ignored the outside noise this summer, stacking solid practices as they worked to prove the doubters wrong.
In Week 1's 24-22 win over Washington, Marcus Epps and Andrew Mukuba delivered a strong showing that quelled critics, with the new starting duo displaying efficiency, awareness, and toughness.
With the star power possessed by the current Philadelphia cornerback group, an efficient performance is more important than ever in the safety unit. A weak link can, and absolutely will, be exposed by the opposition, but in Week 1 action, Marcus Epps and Andrew Mukuba absolutely answered the call.
Eagles' safety position is looking to be in solid position entering Week 2
The tandem didn't allow a big play on their watch, and while the veteran Epps provided his usual tenacity with seven tackles, Mukuba, now in his second season, looked decidedly improved in his play recognition and overall awareness.
In total, they combined to surrender just two catches for 14 yards, a solid first showing patrolling the secondary together.
Fresh off their promising regular-season debut, Andrew Mukuba and Marcus Epps will look to keep building in Week 2's trip to Music City to face the Tennessee Titans.
Titans can't be slept on at skill positions by Eagles' Marcus Epps and Andrew Mukuba
In Tennessee's Week 1 loss to the New York Jets, the Titans' pass protection flaws surfaced time and again. Quarterback Cam Ward was repeatedly forced out of his comfort zone, fleeing the pocket in hopes of keeping plays alive. Expect the Eagles' pass rush to post pressures, hurries, and sacks in this Week 2 tilt, forcing Ward to look for early throws to get rid of the ball under consistent duress.
And while the timing and pass protection could be shaky for the home team again in Week 2, the Eagles' secondary must help blanket a cast of skill-position players who can do damage if found open. Prized first-rounder Carnell Tate out of Ohio State will align outside for the corners to tango with, while weapons such as Wandale Robinson and tight end Gunnar Helm will venture plenty over the middle where Mukuba and Epps mainly operate. Coming out of the backfield, Tony Pollard can make plays in the passing phase as well, so he'll also be firmly on the radar for the safety duo.
Eagles fans know Robinson well from his four seasons withseasons with Big Blue, and Helm is a developing second-year tight end out of the University of Texas who can make plays. The group has upside, but overall, it's not a potent cast of playmakers. After facing the likes of Terry McClaurin, Stefon Diggs, and rookie Antonio Williams in Week 1, the Philly secondary enters Week 2 ready to shut this opposing offense down.
Eagles safeties could have loud weekend in Music City
This Titans offense is highly susceptible to turnovers, given its shaky offensive line and a quarterback who still has much to prove at the pro level. A strong pass rush will force Ward to scramble for daylight, and forced throws into tight windows could be in store.
This is a great spot for a pick by Mukuba (two interceptions in 2025), or perhaps a forced fumble by the hard-hitting Epps this weekend.

It's only just begun, but the season is off to a strong start for this new safety duo. Epps and Mukuba are out to prove they can hold down the fort at safety long-term, and you can count on them being fully prepared for the Week 2 mission at hand.
