Ex-Eagles defender returns to NFC East for potential final run in NFL

Good luck sir. You'll need it.

Philadelphia Eagles fans might remember cornerback Rasul Douglas, as he started his NFL career with the Birds. Apparently, Douglas is still plugging away at it.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Douglas signed with the Washington Commanders on a one-year deal worth up to $3.8 million. Douglas played for the Miami Dolphins last year after starting in 13 of the 15 games at corner, racking up 62 tackles, 13 pass deflections, two quarterback hits, two tackles for loss, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and one sack.

Philly selected Douglas in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, spending the first three seasons with the Eagles and winning a Super Bowl with the team. He finished with 118 tackles, 25 pass deflections, nine tackles for loss, five interceptions, and one quarterback hit in 46 games.

Rasul Douglas is back in the NFC East, and could be on his final team

This will be Douglas' sixth NFL team of his career, but has continued to have a solid career in the league. He's been a full-time starter for every team he's played for since the Eagles, where he was more of a reserve player.

The Commanders have been in need of cornerback help after losing Jonathan Jones to the Eagles in free agency. Douglas gives Washington a starter they could throw in from Day 1 and can hold up well doing the job.

A move like this is not enough to move the needle in the NFC East, as the Commanders are still not seen in the same light as the other three teams. The Eagles are still the favorites to win the division, while the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants could pose as legit threats to Philly.

It feels like it has been quite the fall for the Commanders since 2024, when the franchise had so much hope for the future. That NFC Conference Championship loss to the Eagles that season really set the team back to the point that they were pretty awful last season and missed the playoffs.

Eagles fans won't sweat seeing an old friend in Douglas continuing his NFL career with a division rival since he is getting older and showing regression. Philly should be just fine entering a massive 2026 season for a team that needs to keep winning.
