The Philadelphia Eagles did not re-sign a player to a futures contract, as it would have made sense to do so, since he is now lost to another team. That team is one win away from hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

The New England Patriots announced they signed two players to their practice squad, including former Eagles edge rusher Patrick Johnson. The Eagles had Johnson on the roster this past season for nine games, as he racked up eight tackles, two pressures, two quarterback hits, one tackle for loss, and one sack.

Johnson was originally a seventh-round pick of the Eagles in 2021 and has spent most of his career with the team. He had a short stint with the New York Giants in 2024, and the Patriots were his third team.

Patrick Johnson can get his second Super Bowl ring

It seems very unlikely that Johnson would take the field in the Super Bowl unless injuries arise as the Patriots prepare to face the Seattle Seahawks in San Francisco, California. This would be his third time in a Super Bowl, as he won one with the Eagles in the 2024 season and lost another in the 2022 season.

Johnson has been known more as a special teams ace, earning praise from Eagles general manager Howie Roseman before the 2025 regular season. During the season, Johnson found playing time due to injuries, recording his first career sack in the loss to the New York Giants back in October.

There were five former Eagles who will be playing in the Super Bowl, but now Johnson will make it six if he is active for the game. At least some former Eagles players can enjoy the game while fans suffer through it, thinking about what could have been for their team.
