Former Eagles' head coach and Hall of Famer isn't sold on the 2025 team

Is he right?

The Philadelphia Eagles are wrapping up their bye week, as they are in Green Bay to face the Packers on Monday Night Football in Week 10. After a shaky 4-0 start, if that's even possible, Philly lost two in a row, and in typical Eagles' fashion, they then won two in a row.

A solid 6-2, the Eagles have not been a great team by any means and have left a lot of yards out there in offense. The defense has been missing a pass rush all year, and it's just not be nearly as successful as a year as 2024 was.

The team is in the midst of a Super Bowl regression, as it doesn't really feel like a 6-2 team from Philly. Well, a Hall of Famer and former Eagles' head coach did not mince words when discussing the Eagles and whether this team is truly elite.

Former head coach and NFL Hall of Famer Dick Vermeil says the Eagles are NOT an elite team...

Here is a brief snippet of the segment with Vermeil on 94WIP where he says the Eagles are not an elite team, and he brings up some solid points:

Vermeil wasn't bashing this team just to bash them - he did praise the team, said they could become elite, and was very complimentary of Howie Roseman, and how could you not be? Vermeil coached Philly from 1976-1982 and finished with a 54-47 regular season record and a 3-4 playoff record. They lost the Super Bowl in 1980 to the then-Oakland Raiders.

Anyway, one point of emphasis that Vermeil made here, and it is 100% valid, is the low third-down conversion rate, which is a foundational part of a functioning football team on both sides of the ball. Vic Fangio's defense has been fine this year, and it's a more trustworthy and reliable unit than the offense and Philly's third-down conversion of 33.3% is the fourth-lowest in the entire NFL, trailing Cleveland, Houston, and Tennessee, three non-playoff teams.

Dick Vermeil has been around the block more times than we could ever count, so it's a good idea to listen to what he says. The Eagles still have some issues on offense, and it's not as if they've done much to address those issues.

Hopefully, in Week 10 and beyond, the Eagles can begin to resemble how they performed in the 2022 and 2024 NFL Seasons, when they made the Super Bowl in each year.
