Not long ago, veteran running back Miles Sanders was a key piece of a Philadelphia Eagles squad that nearly won Super Bowl LVII. Now, he's a free agent struggling to find a home, suggesting his time in the NFL could just about be over.

Life comes at you fast, and Sanders is learning that the hard way. He wasn't involved in his first and only year with the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys before landing on season-ending injured reserve in October. Coming off a knee/ankle issue, a seemingly nonexistent market for the 2022 Pro Bowler's services further renders him an afterthought.

At this rate, Sanders will have to fight for a spot on any team's roster moving forward, let alone return to star form.

Ex-Eagles star RB Miles Sanders' time in the NFL is on life support

Leaving the Eagles for a payday in March 2023 has proven to backfire tremendously for Sanders, at least from a football standpoint. He massively underperformed after signing a four-year, $25 million contract with the Carolina Panthers, only to become a cap casualty roughly 365 days later. Dallas then took a flier on him with a "prove-it deal," which also didn't work out.

Sanders ran for 117 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries in 2025, but lost a critical fumble in Week 1 — ironically, against the Eagles. However, his efficiency metrics were notably inflated by a 49-yard gallop in Dallas' loss to Philly; that was his lone explosive run before getting hurt.

Dallas let Sanders walk this offseason in favor of younger, unheralded, and unproven guys like Malik Davis, Jaydon Blue, and Phil Mafah. It's quite telling that they'd rather explore other options with minimal experience. Meanwhile, the ex-Eagles standout remains available and doesn't have his next move lined up.

Eagles fans probably can't believe Sanders has hit such a low point. He was a stud across four campaigns in Philadelphia, ranking ninth in the league in rushing yards from 2019 through 2022 (3,708). The 2019 second-round pick recorded a healthy 5.0 yards per carry and eclipsed 1,000 scrimmage yards thrice during that stretch.

Having just turned 29 on May 1, Sanders is at the age where tailbacks typically tend to break down.
