Everyone in the NFL media has been wanting to share their thoughts on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts ever since league personnel ranked him ninth among quarterbacks in a recent ESPN article.
NFL Network's Good Morning Football touched on the subject on what the expectations are for Hurts in 2025. Former NFL linebacker turned analyst Manti Te'o chimed in to erase the negative perspective of being a "system player."
"I said on this show that I think that Jalen Hurts is a system quarterback and I'm trying to change that narrative that being a system player in any type of team or any type of franchise is a bad thing, because it's not. If you are an NFL football player, you would hope that you go to a team that utilizes your strengths the way the Eagles utilizes Jalen Hurts' strengths."
Te'o went on to use Porsche as an example of how to use a vehicle properly. He stated that a Porsche is not typically used for off-roading, as it is designed for paved roads. This was his way to describe how the Eagles use Hurts.
"Jalen Hurts is a Porsche and the Philadelphia Eagles use him the way a Porsche should be used. Again, I think there's this negative stigma about being a system player. I don't think there is anything negative about being a system player and being in a system Jalen Hurts has been have given them a Super Bowl, has given him a Super Bowl MVP and so I think going into this year, he's going to continue doing what he's been doing this whole time."

Is Hurts a system quarterback, and is it a bad thing if he is?
Someone might have to come up with a definitive definition of what a "system" player is. If everything works out on a team, shouldn't everyone be considered a "system" player?
For example, quarterback Sam Darnold struggled with the New York Jets but was widely successful in the Minnesota Vikings' head coach Kevin O'Connell's system last year. O'Connell has had other quarterbacks, such as Kirk Cousins and Joshua Dobbs, who have found success in the system.
Every player is a "system" player. They just need to find the right one for them.
Hurts has been a master in the Eagles' offense because he can use his athleticism to make plays on the run, whether he holds onto it himself or throws it. He can handle any situation in the Eagles' scheme, and he proved it last year when he had to throw it more in the Super Bowl and came out with a title and MVP.
There's nothing wrong with being a system player because every player is. Hurts does his job to perfection and shouldn't be punished because Saquon Barkley is one of the best players in the league.
The numbers show that Hurts is accurate with the football (68.7% completion percentage in 2024) and can make the right decisions when throwing the ball (five interceptions and a 103.7 passer rating in 2024).
No one should ever have to apologize for having "too much" talent around them. How many quarterbacks can say they have started in two Super Bowls? Not many.

Everyone is probably getting tired of all the talk surrounding Hurts and whether he is an elite quarterback. People will believe what they want, so Eagles fans don't care, as they know how truly special he is.
