Former Eagles defender just inadvertently proved he regrets leaving Philly

He would love to have that decision back.

One player the Philadelphia Eagles have been working to permanently replace over the last two offseasons is edge rusher Josh Sweat.

Sweat left the Eagles last offseason after winning the Super Bowl with them to sign a four-year, $76.4 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals. Despite having a career season in 2025, though, Cardinals insider Kyle Odegard reported the reason that Sweat has not been at OTAs in Arizona, and it's not because of injury.

"Don’t know the exact reason for the absence, but I’ve been hearing for awhile that Josh Sweat is not particularly happy in AZ."

Is Josh Sweat potentially regretting his decision to leave Philly?

Sweat had a career-high 12 sacks with the Cardinals last year, but somehow did not get a Pro Bowl selection. Even with that great stat, Arizona was one of the worst teams in the NFL last year and is going through a transitional period with a new coach and figuring out the future at quarterback.

While Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was never going to give Sweat $76 million, it does make some fans wonder whether he regrets not trying to keep him in Philly for less money. The Cardinals are a dysfunctional mess of a roster that has also been notorious for having some of the worst facilities in the league.

This is starting to feel like a potential breakup is on the way for the Cardinals and Sweat that could result in a trade. Would Roseman dare to make the call and try to bring him back? Seems unlikely with his expensive contract, but with Roseman being a salary cap wizard, anything is possible.

If Sweat had just stayed and let the Eagles offer a good contract for less money, maybe Philly would have been better off defensively at edge rusher. It was still a good decision for Roseman to avoid paying that kind of money to Sweat, as they are better off now without him.
