The Philadelphia Eagles got their pass rusher. After a major trade with the Minnesota Vikings, they have acquired Jonathan Greenard.

The versatile defender was publicly on the trade block, and the Eagles were a rumored landing spot. The mid-draft trade fills a major hole on the Eagles' defense, giving them an edge defender who can stay on the field for every down.

Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Eagles gave the Vikings two third-round picks in exchange for Greenard and a seventh-round pick in this year's draft. One of the third-rounders comes from the 2027 draft. For a player of Greenard's impact, that's a deal that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman would make ten times out of ten.

Eagles' Jonathan Greenard trade details make the deal even sweeter

Since Greenard was reported to be available for trade, the rumored price tag was a second-round selection. The Eagles' trade package equals out to about the same amount, but the combination of late third-round picks should have been easy to give up for Roseman.

The former Vikings edge rusher recorded 12 or more sacks in back-to-back years before struggling in 2025. While he missed significant time due to injury last season, he was still impactful when on the field.

In Philadelphia, he has a chance to be the best edge rusher on Vic Fangio's defense. With dominant players lie Jalen Carter on the interior, he'll have more one-on-one opportunities than he's been used to getting in Minnesota.

Schultz also reported that the Eagles have agreed to a contract extension with Greenard. The reported four-year deal is worth $100 million with $50 million guaranteed. Roseman was quick to lock down his new star defender after making the trade.

The price tag on the contract extension may feel rich, but the Eagles have consistently found ways to make their financial situations work despite large salary cap hits.

Overall, this is a clear win for Philly. This trade eliminates the need to add a high-quality edge defender in this draft. The Eagles have focused heavily on offense early, clearly having the Greenard trade already in the bag.

This is yet another Roseman master class.
