Howie Roseman proves (again) that he's a genius with Eagles' salaries on defense

The wizard strikes again.

There really isn't much that Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman can do wrong, as he's been one of the best in the NFL at everything he's done on the job.

The one thing everyone talks about is how Roseman is a genius with the salary cap and how to manipulate it so the Eagles don't take a big hit to their cap room. This is why there isn't a general manager with more void years on a contract than Roseman does.

Warren Sharp looked at the most expensive defenses in the NFL right now. Shockingly, the Eagles have the second-least-expensive defense, with those players' salaries totaling $84.1 million. The only team with a cheaper salary on defense than Philly is the Miami Dolphins at $81.1 million, and they ripped apart their defense with releases and trades in the offseason.

When looking at the Eagles' cap hits in 2026, the top seven players are all on offense. Linebacker Zack Baun is the first defender that shows up as he only has a $7.5 million cap hit. Here are the top five defenders and their cap hits for 2026:

  • Zack Baun, LB ($7.5 million)
  • Jalen Carter, DT ($6.9 million)
  • Jonathan Greenard, EDGE ($6.2 million)
  • Jordan Davis, DT ($5 million)
  • Quinyon Mitchell, CB ($4 million)

What's insane is that Mitchell, an All-Pro in 2025, is only fifth on that list and is 14th overall on the team. His fellow All-Pro corner, Cooper DeJean, only has a $2.5 million cap hit and isn't even in the top 20.

The Eagles have been so lucky at this point that they have found so much young talent on defense that has come cheap to them. Roseman knows, though, that the good times will eventually come to an end when guys like Carter, Mitchell, and DeJean need new contracts in the next few years, as they will all reset the market.

Enjoy it while it lasts, Eagles fans, because this won't last forever, as these players are about to get very expensive.
