Howie Roseman's answer on possible Zach Ertz reunion says more about Eagles

After the Philadelphia Eagles' 53-man roster reveal, a big reveal in their conversation began with a player outside the team.

The Eagles included four tight ends on the roster, which sparked the Zach Ertz conversation, thanks to PHLY Eagles reporter EJ Smith sharing that a possible reunion between Ertz and the team is "on the table."

That certainly made Eagles fans happy after seeing rookie Eli Stowers struggle in the preseason and E.J. Jenkins shockingly make the team. The real question is how much of this is reality versus just a rumor.

Could Eagles bring in Zach Ertz this season to help tight end room?

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman spoke with the media for the first time since finalizing the 53-man roster and adding 13 players to the practice squad. Roseman addressed the Ertz rumors head-on.

"You know, at first I'd say what an unbelievable player, what an unbelievable person, tremendous respect for him," Roseman said. "At the same time, love what we have going in our tight end room too. So I would say, you know, have talked to Zach over a period of time, obviously rehabbing his ACL and the relationship. Just like a lot of our former players who've been here. But like anything else, we wouldn't get into any conversations about anything other than from a big picture perspective. You know, in my opinion, one of the greatest tight ends to play the game, and just a tremendous respect for him, and also excited about the tight ends that we have here."

Ertz excelled over his eight-and-a-half years in Philly, making three Pro Bowls and helping the franchise win its first-ever Super Bowl. He finished with 579 receptions for 6,267 yards and 38 touchdowns in 123 games with the Birds.

After his time with the Eagles, Ertz was traded to the Arizona Cardinals, where he would spend three seasons. He spent the last two years with the Washington Commanders.

The biggest concern with Ertz right now is whether he is 100% to go after tearing his ACL last year with the Commanders. All reports suggest he's ready to play for any team.

Bringing in Ertz would be a massive difference-maker in that tight end room. It would give Goedert a perfect complementary piece at tight end, while taking the pressure off of Stowers to be an instant contributor in 2026. Jenkins can head down to the practice squad, and Johnny Mundt can still be the blocker the Eagles need.

It could be all for show, but, interestingly, Roseman is backing the tight ends up. He could be doing it to show confidence in public, but for him to take the time to say that shows he might actually like what they are doing at tight ends. Eagles fans may not share the same enthusiasm, though.

Many moving parts would need to fall into place for Ertz and the Eagles to make this reunion a reality, but it is quite the storyline to follow over the next two weeks.
