It's time for Eagles fans to have the uncomfortable Lane Johnson conversation

We don't want to, but it has to happen.

There's no denying that Lane Johnson might end up going down as the best offensive lineman in Philadelphia Eagles franchise history.

Since being the fourth overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft, Johnson has been selected to six Pro Bowls, two first-team All Pros, and three second-team All Pros. He's also won two Super Bowls and appeared in three during his time with the Eagles.

Johnson has been stellar in the first half of the season, as he has not allowed a single quarterback hit or sack through 10 games. That's why it's painful to say this, but the Eagles fan base has to start a dialogue about whether he might be reaching the twilight of his career.

It might be nearing the end for Lane Johnson as an Eagle

When Johnson has been on the field this year, he's been as dominant as they come at right tackle. It's hard not to allow a single sack when he has pass blocked on 262 passing plays.

The primary concern with Johnson is that he is now sustaining injuries at an alarming rate. Week 2 against the Kansas City Chiefs, Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams, and Week 10 against the Green Bay Packers are examples of injuries sustained in games, as he has dealt with shoulder and lower-body issues.

It hit Johnson's limit in the 16-9 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 11 when he was knocked out of the game with a foot injury. Johnson looks to be potentially out for four to six weeks with a Lisfranc sprain in his foot.

Taking Johnson's place at right tackle will most likely be Fred Johnson, who has been doing that since the Week 3 Rams game, where he came in for Lane Johnson and saved the day. While Fred Johnson is a solid player and someone Eagles fans love, he's obviously not on the same level as Lane Johnson.

This isn't about saying Lane Johnson should retire now, but the Eagles need to start planning for the future. Johnson clearly can't stay healthy as he hasn't played a full season since 2015.

Whether that's finding a replacement in the draft or pursuing another young player in free agency, Johnson might not be playing long at the current rate, given his injury history.
