Jake Elliott is officially a problem after Eagles kicker blows it twice on TNF
By Mike Luciano
Part of the reason the Philadelphia Eagles have been able to win as many games as they have in the last eight seasons has been the consistency of kicker Jake Elliott. In his eight seasons with the team, Elliott has made a Pro Bowl, been named Second Team All-Pro, and kicked Philly to a Super Bowl victory.
The Eagles haven't seen that same level of production from No. 4 this season. Elliott's performance in primetime against the Washington Commanders illustrates just how far he has fallen. Every kick beyond 40 yards is no longer an automatic three points, as the fanbase must hold their collective breaths.
Elliott missed his first kick of the day from 44 yards on the Eagles' opening drive. While disappointing, it isn't the end of the world. He has a chance to redeem himself by narrowing Washington's lead to 7-3 after a Brian Robinson touchdown, but he failed in truly epic fashion.
Elliott sent a 51-yard kick wide right, taking six points off the board as a result of his inability to do his job. After converting on two chip-shot field goals to help Philadelphia eventually claw a lead back, Elliott would miss an extra point to keep the score at 12-10 in the fourth quarter.
Elliott wasn't having the best season, but misses like this have officially taken the Eagles' kicking game from disappointing to a genuine liability.
Jake Elliott is a problem after Eagles kicker misses 2 FGs vs. Commanders
Elliott, who signed a four-year contract extension with the Eagles during the offseason, is now just 12-17 on the season. Elliott has missed all four of his attempts beyond 50 yards this season, which is a direct reversal of the guy who would drill field goals from Bucks County in past years.
In 2023, Elliott missed two field goal attempts and converted 30. In the past three seasons, Elliott was 15-17 from beyond 50 yards. Be it a mental block or simple poor performance, the Eagles are now blowing games with playoff implications due to their poor execution
Against a Washington team that has proven to be one of the more consistent offenses in the league, the Eagles can't let too many chances to victimize them slip away. Elliott has been a fan favorite in past years, but a notoriously fickle Eagles fanbase won't tolerate a regression like this against a division rival.
