John Harbaugh fantasy makes no sense for Eagles regardless of playoff fate

Regardless of what happens with the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs, the idea that the team would replace Nick Sirianni as the head coach makes absolutely zero sense.

Even if it means trying to hire John Harbaugh.

The Baltimore Ravens dropped an absolute bombshell on the entire NFL when they decided to fire Harbaugh, who had been the team's head coach since the 2008 season. But a reunion between the Eagles and Harbaugh is almost certainly out of the question, even if you never say "never" when it comes to the unpredictable nature of the NFL.

Eagles replacing Nick Sirianni with John Harbaugh is not happening, regardless of the playoffs

Eagles fans can boo the offense off the field less than a calendar year after the team brought home a Lombardi Trophy. They can be frustrated with head coach Nick Sirianni all they want. They can be as critical of Vic Fangio, one of the best defensive minds in the history of the game, all they want.

The reality is, Eagles fans know excellence, and they don't want the team to fall short of that. The expectation from the fan base is dominance, and anything short of dominance and excellence is going to be met with perhaps a little overreaction.

That's part of the gig of being a fan, right?

Well, the idea of the franchise firing Nick Sirianni if they get bounced early from the postseason is one where you'd have to pump the brakes a little bit. It's one thing to boo the team off the field after the latest three-and-out. It's another thing entirely to fire a head coach who just won your team a Super Bowl less than a year ago.

The Eagles are run by one of the most aggressive general managers in the NFL in Howie Roseman, and perhaps Roseman's aggressive nature has created some perception among a sect of the fan base that the team actually would fire Sirianni if they don't make it back to the Super Bowl, or even win it all.

It's easy to blame Sirianni for the offense's struggles this season, and there have been many. The Eagles lead the NFL in three-and-outs as an offense, Saquon Barkley hasn't been nearly as great as he was last year, Jalen Hurts has struggled, and A.J. Brown has been as discontent as ever.

Sirianni is undoubtedly at the center of all that, but even with a coach like Harbaugh hitting the open market, you can't always just make the wholesale change just for the sake of it. Sirianni is a good coach, and he's proven that over the last handful of years. You might not win the Super Bowl every single year in the NFL, and that reality has to be accepted.

The availability of Harbaugh is enticing for many teams out there, but there are plenty of teams who actually need a head coach or who could realistically justify making a bold move to upgrade. The Eagles are not one of them, no matter what happens in the playoffs this year.
