With all these changes happening with the Philadelphia Eagles, it's hard to keep track of the jersey numbers as the team rolls into the 2026 season.
One lingering question was what new Eagles edge rusher Jonathan Greenard was going to wear after his trade from the Minnesota Vikings. Last week on former Eagles defensive end Chris Long's podcast, Greenard talked about being somewhere in the 50s, like the ones he wore during his short Vikings career.
Well, that became a reality when Eagles reporter Anthony DiBona shared a screenshot of the Eagles media guide showing that Greenard will be wearing number 52. That number was originally with another new edge rusher, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, who is now going to wear number 57.

During his time with the Vikings, Greenard wore number 58, but now returns to number 52. That's the jersey number he wore when his career started with the Houston Texans.
That was good of Tryon-Shoyinka to be a good teammate and let Greenard have the number 52 jersey. There's a chance he might have been forced into it by the Eagles, though, since the franchise is investing $100 million in four years with the new contract extension he signed when the trade happened.
The most recent Eagles player to wear number 52 was Za'Darius Smith, who wore it for about a month last year before he abruptly retired from the NFL, not even halfway through the season. It has not historically been a successful number, but some good players have worn it in Philly over the franchise's lifespan, including Dave Lloyd and Barry Gardner.

Greenard, as well as Eagles fans, hope the 2024 Pro Bowl selection will live up to the hype and become the franchise's best player not only to wear number 52 but also to be the best they have ever had.
