Philadelphia Eagles fans will remember not so fondly the moment when former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon took the Arizona Cardinals head coaching job right before their Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023. That run has finally ended

The Cardinals admit their mistake and have decided to fire Gannon after three years as the head coach. He went 15-36 as the head coach and lost 14 of the 15 games he coached before getting the ax.

Gannon was Nick Sirianni's first hire as defensive coordinator for the Eagles, as he coached there for two seasons. The Eagles' defense was 10th overall in total defense in 2021 and second overall in 2022.

Gannon loses his job and it's fitting after his exit from Philly

Not a lot of Eagles fans are going to forgive Gannon for what he did at the end of his time in Philadelphia. He coached the Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs, knowing he had already taken the Cardinals head coaching job. That distraction led the Eagles to allow 38 points without adjusting the game plan, resulting in a loss.

There was controversy after the Super Bowl loss, with the Eagles brass upset at Gannon for not being 100% focused on the job. As part of the tampering scandal, the Cardinals and Eagles swapped third-round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, and the Eagles gave the Cardinals a 2023 fifth-round pick.

Since then, it has not been great for Gannon as he has had losing seasons every year as the head coach. The Eagles, meanwhile, won the Super Bowl in 2024 with Vic Fangio as the defensive coordinator.

It is going to be a long road back for Gannon, as he most likely will have to try to get a defensive coordinator job if he ever wants to be a head coach again. The Eagles sure won't be inviting him onto the staff ever again.
