And, just like that, the Philadelphia Eagles must again find themselves an offensive coordinator. No one is shocked. We all knew this would happen, but this feels different than the empty feeling of losing Shane Steichen after Super Bowl LVII.
We felt robbed because of a holding call that wouldn't have changed the play's outcome had it been ignored. We endured watching red and gold confetti fall. Then, we felt the sting of losing our top two assistant coaches (Steichen and Jonathan Gannon).
The worst part about everything was this. We had no second Vince Lombardi Trophy to comfort us.
In the aftermath of Shane and J.G.'s departures, the stress only increased. We went as far as asking if Gannon had lost focus.
We wondered if a lackluster defensive performance was the result of him being unprepared because of spending time trying to pursue his first head-coaching opportunity.
Fast forward to the present, and what a difference two years makes. We've gone from depression and irritation to euphoria.
Kellen Moore leaves the Eagles to join the Saints. His best replacement seems to already be on the current coaching roster.
So, here we are. It's been just under two days since the Birds won it all. Just under a day has passed since they returned with another Lombardi Trophy.
No one is questioning Moore's effort like they questioned Gannon's two years ago. Kellen called one heck of a game, and we're forever grateful.
But, now Kellen has moved on. It's official. He WILL accept the New Orleans Saints head-coaching job. That begs two questions. What is Philly's next move? Who do they hire? The best option seems to already be on the roster.
To the uninformed and uninitiated, we'd like to introduce you to Kevin Patullo. He's Philly's passing game coordinator/associate head coach. He just completed his fourth season of service.
Kevin has been Nick Sirianni's right-hand man, joining the team as the pass game coordinator in 2021. The associate head coach title was added in 2023.
Patullo has been a part of this team through tenures of Steichen, Brian Johnson, and Kellen Moore as Eagles offensive coordinators. He's worked closely with Jalen Hurts.
We've seen not only some of Jalen's best football. We've also seen A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith enjoy great years and great success partially because of his efforts.
We've often complained about there being a lack of consistency in Jalen's development. Perhaps you have heard. Since high school, he has only had the same OC for consecutive seasons once (Steichen from 2021-22).
Again, he and his OC part ways, but Kellen Moore's best replacement option appears to be someone already on the coaching roster. Patullo's promotion feels like a no-brainer and would give Jalen the consistency we crave.
