There's been a lot said about the Philadelphia Eagles over the past few days after their awful 21-17 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Still, the commentary about the offense from a member of the organization itself is a new level of absurdity.
Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo's press conference on Tuesday felt more like he was playing defense as he was defending what was happening with the offense. Patullo shared his thoughts on how the offense is progressing throughout the last five games.
Warning to Eagles fans, Patullo's comments might trigger a whole new level of confusion they haven't felt since the Brian Johnson days.
"We've done a good job. We just gotta keep progressing and working through this. Everybody's into this. Everyone is super detailed. We just have to keep pushing. Because when we've done what we need to do, we've moved the ball extremely well at a high rate."
Who is Patullo trying to fool with his comments on the offense?
Let's start with the numbers, shall we?
The Eagles' offense is ranked 30th in total offense, averaging 261.6 yards per game. Their passing game is worse, ranking 31st with an average of 161.8 yards per game.
Here's the worst stat: The Eagles' running game has averaged 99.8 yards per game, ranking 25th in the NFL. This is the same rushing attack that has been ranked in the top 10 in each of the last four years under Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni.
There are only two badges of honor that Patullo can be somewhat proud of with his offense. The Eagles have scored 25 points per game, ranking 14th in the league. They are the best in the NFL in turnovers, having given away only one turnover in five games. Yay....
The tough part is that Patullo let A.J. Brown essentially bully him into passing the football more, and look how that turned out. Hurts dropped back in the pocket to pass 44 times, and the Eagles ran the ball just 11 times against the Broncos.
Just because one play isn't happy, it doesn't mean the whole identity of the offense needs to change. The thing Patullo must work on this week is finding the balance between getting Brown the ball from Hurts, but letting Saquon Barkley do his thing on the ground.

Patullo can paint any picture he wants with the Eagles, but at the end of the day, he has created stick figures that look nothing like the Mona Lisa the offense was last year. He's got a lot of work to do with the fan base, as Philly knows football, and right now, the Eagles' offense isn't playing good football.
