The Philadelphia Eagles are going to be meeting with as many prospects as possible at the NFL Combine, but one they met with already proved to be the real deal with his drills.
UCF defensive end Malachi Lawrence had a stellar showing at the combine, proving his speed is a serious weapon for him. Lawrence finished third in the 40-yard dash with a 4.52-second run and in the 10-yard split with 1.59. He also had the second-highest vertical with 40" and second in broad jump with 10'10".
Lawrence was a first-team All-Big 12 selection last season at UCF as he finished with 28 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, seven sacks, three pass deflections, and two forced fumbles on the year. He has 72 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, and 20 sacks in his college career with the Knights.
Malachi Lawrence just became a legitimate draft target for the Eagles
Philly is looking for an edge rusher this offseason, as it was a position that struggled for half the season before the Eagles traded for Jaelan Phillips. The arrival of Phillips elevated the position to new heights, but Phillips is expected to get a big payday, so it isn't known if the Eagles can re-sign him before free agency hits.
Lawrence seems to fit the bill of what Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio wants to see in his edge rusher. Fangio wants athletically gifted rushers who have the speed to beat tackles that way and get to the quarterback, which is exactly what Lawrence can do.
The Eagles have already shown interest in Lawrence, who told reporters before the workout that he had met with the team. He detailed how the meeting went.
"It was good. We went over film, talking a little bit. It was a good meeting I would say."
Lawrence was also asked what stood out to him about Fangio's defense in Philly, as he gave some shoutouts to guys who stood out on film.
"Their edge rushers. Their speed, like Nolan Smith. He's a fast guy. Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter in the middle. They're incredible players."

The early projections have Lawrence as a Day 2 selection, and his performance at the combine certainly solidified that a second-round selection is a real possibility. That might work out in the Eagles' favor, as they have other needs, so if they can address one of those in the first round and take Lawrence in the second, that would be ideal.

Lawrence is a special talent who could really flourish in this Eagles' defense if given the chance.
