Nakobe Dean and DeVonta Smith save Nick Sirianni from his own incompetence
We know every player on the Philadelphia Eagles roster has his players have his back. We know he'll fall on the sword for his guys again and again, but there are times when Nick Sirianni comes across as a spy. It's like he's hell-bent on destroying this team from the inside out.
It isn't as bad as what we saw from Chip Kelly, but one of these days Nick's decision-making will cost this team dearly. Philly is lucky, and we mean LUCKY, to have survived the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 9.
DeVonta Smith and his Eagles teammates bail Nick Sirianni out in a game the Eagles should have never been threatened in.
Nick Sirianni might be the worst X's and O's head coach we have ever seen on an Eagles sideline. For an organization that handed the keys to Chip Kelly and Rich Kotite, that's saying something. Sooner or later, he will cost this team and cost them dearly. With a superior roster, he almost gift-wrapped one for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
We don't care that it's a tried and true theory that, on any given Sunday, any NFL team can lose. We don't care that Alan Eck and his officiating crew were abhorrent. Philly had several opportunities to win this game convincingly and had to win despite their head coach's incompetence.
Nick Sirianni eschewed two easy field-goal attempts and watched his team fail on fourth down in the first and third quarters. He also ordered unnecessary two-point conversions after three TD scores. He failed on every single one of those.
When he did trust his field goal kicker, Jake Elliott was trotted out for a 57-yard attempt before the two-minute warning. He missed. Long story short, far too many points were left on the field!
We can criticize officiating. We've always thought blaming the refs can be a bush-league move, but let's do so anyway. Eck's crew blew several calls in this one.
Jalen Hurts broke the plane during a Brotherly Shove but was robbed. Travon Walker was awarded six points on a fumble recovery where Saquon Barkley didn't actually fumble. Still, all of that pales in comparison to Sirianni's awful decision-making. He rarely gives his team an edge, and he is more often than not bailed out because he has a superior roster.
Don't thank Nick for this win. Thank a late score by DeVonta Smith and Nakobe Dean's interception. They helped prevent what could have been a crushing loss to an inferior opponent who hobbled into and out of this one. Great plays by great players won this game. Bad coaching almost blew it.
A win is a win, so maybe we should be happy. We won't lie though. We're concerned. Too often, Nick Sirianni is causing more issues than he's fixing on game days. If this isn't cured, it will cost the Eagles a game as it almost did in Week 9.
