One aspect of the Philadelphia Eagles' roster that continues to be a major concern for the team is the lack of a solid starting safety.
While Andrew Mukuba is the future at one of the safety positions, Marcus Epps is expected to be the other starter, and while he is a solid player, he's not at the same level as a lot of starters in the NFL. Sports Illustrated's Jeff Kerr had an interesting idea that the Eagles should look at making a trade with the Cleveland Browns to acquire safety Grant Delpit.
"Perhaps the Eagles can scheme something up with the Browns to get Delpit, who is in the final year of a three-year, $36 million deal," Kerr said. "Delpit's cap hit is only $8 million too. Delpit fits what the Eagles could be seeking. Proven starter in the NFL in the final year of his contract, and he's 27 years old. The Eagles could allow Delpit to play out his deal or give him a short-term extension like they did when acquiring Dontayvion Wicks. Just to give Delpit that job security and a starting spot on lock for the next few years."
Should the Eagles consider a trade for Grant Delpit?
Last season, Delpit had 89 tackles, seven quarterback hits, four tackles for loss, four pass deflections, three sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one interception, and allowed a completion percentage of 66.7. He has started in 68 of the 78 games he's appeared in across his five-year NFL career.
Epps did a commendable job filling in for Mukuba when he got hurt last year in the last month of the season. The Eagles could always do better at the safety position, though, and not wait to see how Epps does as a full-time starter.
Philly made the same mistake in 2025 when everyone knew they needed edge rusher help and didn't address it until the trade deadline. It would be unwise for the Eagles to wait too long and should go for a trade to bring in the Browns' safety.
A trade might only need a Day 3 pick to get the job done, so the price would be somewhat low for Philly. The Browns selected Toledo safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the 2026 NFL Draft and already have enough depth at safety that Delpit is expendable. Plus, Delpit is in the final year of his contract, and Cleveland most likely won't bring him back, so they might as well get a pick from the Eagles that will use him as a one-year rental.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has a way of working his magic in a trade, and this feels like a time where he can get the job done to bring in a solid starter like Delpit.
