Eagles reporter's post-draft thoughts are aligned with fans (expect one statement)

We got a question on one thing.

There has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the Philadelphia Eagles' 2026 NFL Draft.

From the selections of first-round pick Makai Lemon and second-round pick Eli Stowers, the Eagles hit a bunch of home runs with their picks, but many are wondering where the team goes from here. The Athletic's Brooks Kubena shared his post-draft thoughts with one comment that Eagles fans might not love to hear.

"Wide receiver Makai Lemon and tight end Eli Stowers should immediately contribute. GM Howie Roseman leveraged his draft capital in trades for Lemon, a top-15 player on their board, and edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, whom the Eagles signed to a four-year, $100 million contract with $50 million guaranteed. They picked Markel Bell (No. 68) and Micah Morris (No. 207), which gives them depth behind a starting lineup of Pro Bowl-caliber players, but doesn’t preclude them from taking bigger swings in 2027. I wouldn’t expect the Eagles to be done adding depth at edge rusher and safety this summer."

Should the Eagles ignore the safety position during the summer?

Granted, the Eagles did select a safety in the seventh round of the draft with Texas Tech's Cole Wisniewski, but despite the Reed Blankenship comparisons, it's not enough to make anyone comfortable with him being the future. This has led to the idea that the Eagles have to lean on either Marcus Epps or Michael Carter II to start alongside Andrew Mukuba at safety.

Mukuba at least showed signs of being a playmaker last year in his rookie season, despite some consistent struggles in coverage. Epps played well in Mukuba's absence last season, but he's not considered a 17-game starter as he's more of a bridge player.

This feels a lot like last year when the Eagles ignored the edge rusher and cornerback positions and then had to use the trade deadline to finally address them. It might end up being the same thing this year, but Philly fans would like to avoid that and just get it done now before it costs them games.

If the Eagles want to ignore the safety position and not address it in the summer, that's their choice, but the fan base has a general idea of how this will end. Hopefully, Roseman doesn't wait too long to ignore it if it is bad enough. An edge rusher is fine, but if they are serious about safety, they should address it right away.
