The Philadelphia Eagles need to get some depth added onto the roster before minicamp and training camp begin, as they certainly got that done with their new signing.

According to sports agent Joe Linta, the Eagles have signed linebacker Chandler Martin to a contract. Martin spent last season with the Baltimore Ravens after going undrafted out of Memphis.

In three games with the Ravens, he racked up five tackles. Martin played in 42% of the special teams snaps in those games, being on the field for 34 plays.

Eagles add Chandler Martin to the roster

With the loss of Nakobe Dean, who went on to sign a three-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency, depth at the linebacker position is needed, and Martin will be able to help with that. He doesn't have experience playing on defense in the NFL, but he was successful at Memphis playing the position.

More importantly, though, this is a big upgrade for the special teams. The Eagles traded away one of their top special teams aces in Sydney Brown, so Martin can easily fill in and help out there.

Things will get a bit more interesting at linebacker for the rest of the offseason and right before the regular season with competition coming in. Martin will be competing with Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Smael Mondon Jr. for playing time not only on defense, but on special teams as well.

Trotter should be in the clear, as he is the number three linebacker behind Zack Baun and Jihaad Campbell, and will still help on special teams, but Mondon might have direct competition with Martin. If Trotter gets more involved on defense and gets his special teams snaps taken away, watch for Martin and Mondon to compete against each other on special teams.
