The Philadelphia Eagles were eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday, losing a Wild Card matchup 23-19 to the San Francisco 49ers. With Philly’s season over, it’s now official that the NFL will have a new champion. Unfortunately, that has seemed like the case for most of the year, because the Eagles just couldn’t put it all together, despite winning 11 games.
Nearly all of Philadelphia’s problems came on the offensive side of the ball, as the unit couldn’t consistently produce, despite being filled with stars. Because of that, Eagles fans have been calling for changes all season, and they’re reportedly about to get their wish. On Monday, NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed that Philadelphia will make changes to its offensive coaching staff, with the team expected to bring in a “proven offensive mind.”
Eagles planning to change offensive staff, and add proven offensive mind
Offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo has been the top target of criticism in Philadelphia this season, receiving heat from fans and analysts. He took over as offensive coordinator this season, after serving as the pass game coordinator for the previous four years, and it seems he’ll be one-and-done as the Eagles' OC. Simply put, the offense had far too many struggles under his lead, and the franchise wouldn’t be able to defend running things back with him as offensive coordinator.
The question then becomes who will replace Patullo. If the Eagles are actually looking for a proven offensive mind like Schefter reported, everyone’s mind will jump to the established offensive coaches who are currently available. The recently fired Mike McDaniel is the hottest offensive name in the candidate pool, as he’s currently interviewing for head coaching jobs and offensive coordinator positions. Kliff Kingsbury is also another interesting name who’s doing the same thing.

Eagles fans could probably be sold on either of those options as offensive coordinator, but there’s no telling who the team will end up with. It’ll be interesting to see what direction Philadelphia goes in, because one thing is already clear: the franchise has to get the hire right. If the offense can’t figure things out next season, there will probably be even bigger changes for the team.
