NFL voice calls out Eagles for A.J. Brown mistake that haunts them this offseason

Not a great move by the team.

The Philadelphia Eagles are dealing with A.J. Brown, who is reportedly seeking a trade, but they are partly in this situation because of something they could have avoided a long time ago.

Brown signed a three-year contract extension just two seasons ago, but the Eagles have not seen him be the guy fans were hoping he would be. Bleacher Report writer Brad Gagnon looked at the most overpaid player on each team, with Brown being the choice for the Eagles.

"Jordan Davis is certainly overpaid based on his position and production, but that contract is friendly in the short term and he has room to grow. So instead we're calling out Brown, who signed a three-year, $96 million extension two years ago and has not matched his earlier peak production since. He barely reached 1,000 yards in 2025 and has a top-10 AAV and cap hit entering 2026. Throw in the tension surrounding his situation within the organization, and this is a no-brainer."

Eagles could have avoided A.J. Brown mess they are in

Brown hasn't been bad at all; he's been a solid talent for the team, but he is not living up to expectations. His 1,003 yards last year didn't even lead the team, with DeVonta Smith beating him out at 1.008.

To be fair to Brown, the Eagles' passing game has been among the weakest in the league since 2024. It has been a struggle for any receiver outside Brown or Smith to be successful in this offense when the Eagles simply aren't getting the yards they need.

The contract extension the Eagles gave Brown is really hurting them, as they will take a negative cap hit if he is traded before June 1. That is causing a holdup in closing a deal, and it's preventing the team from securing valuable draft picks for the 2026 NFL Draft.

There is still hope the Eagles can find some kind of resolution to the Brown situation, whether that's trading him or getting him more involved in the offense. The more this mess continues, the worse the contract looks.
