It appears that Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo isn't running the show by himself anymore for the offense.
Sources tell ESPN Eagles beat reporter Tim McManus that Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is starting to step in more with the offense. McManus went into detail in his report about some of the ways Sirianni is getting more involved with the offense.
“Sirianni has been vocal in offensive meetings and has been presenting material alongside offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, sources said. According to one source, he has been addressing the group for longer than usual at the top of the meetings before ceding to Patullo, who continues to run them.”
Will Sirianni's involved in offense finally lead to changes?
The concern with Sirianni is that he has never been a play caller in his career, as some have wanted him to be instead of Patullo. When Sirianni was the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 through 2020, head coach Frank Reich handled the play-calling, and Sirianni helped game-plan for the offense.
Sirianni might not be able to call plays, but he certainly knows how to put together a good game plan. He has proven his success with offenses, and this is his strength as a coach.
While some might see this as the head coach undermining the offensive coordinator in team meetings, this was a necessary change. This can at least give Patullo a chance to run the offense, but it is now becoming clear that he will be running Sirianni's offense more the way that he wants it.
This offense has struggled this season, ranking 24th in total offense (304.8 per game), 23rd in passing (196.3 yards per game), 22nd in rushing (108.5 yards per game and 19th in points (22.5 points per game). As McManus also pointed out, the offense is averaging 15.5 points per game in the last four games, resulting in the Eagles going 2-2 in that span.
In the past week, Eagles fans and media have done a better job of avoiding putting all the blame on Patullo, but the reality is he's running one of Philadelphia's worst offenses in two decades. The numbers don't lie, and the eye doesn't lie.
