There's no one who understands how good the San Francisco 49ers' offense is more than Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio does.
Fangio has been grinding away to prepare for the 49ers' high-flying offense, which has been rolling all season, for the upcoming NFC Wild Card game. When speaking with reporters, Fangio acknowledged that he knows this won't be an easy matchup for his Eagles' defense.
“They have a really good scheme," Fangio said via The Athletic's Zach Berman. "It's all packaged together very nicely. They give you a lot of good motions. Everything they do is with a purpose, and they do a really good job of it. Obviously, [49ers QB Brock] Purdy operates it very well, [49ers RB Christian] McCaffrey's an elite back, got a good group of receivers, [49ers TE George] Kittle at tight end. I mean, they had a run where they were [the] hottest offense in the league for like six, seven weeks in a row.”
Eagles defense versus the 49ers offense could make or break season
San Francisco has truly been one of the best offenses in the NFL this season. They have ranked seventh in the NFL in total offense (351.4 yards per game) and fifth in passing (244.5 yards per game).
Philly has been no slouch either on defense during the 2025 campaign. The Eagles have ranked 13th in total defense with 314.2 yards per game, eighth in pass defense with 189.8 yards per game, and fifth in points allowed per game with 19.1.
Where the Eagles will need to do some major work is first contain McCaffrey, as he can do it all, from running out of the backfield to lining up as a receiver. Kittle is a nightmare for linebackers and safeties in coverage, with his size and strong hands making it nearly impossible to cover him.
Fangio will be leaning a lot on his much-improved pass rush to get pressure on Purdy and slow down the passing game. Eagles breakout star Jalyx Hunt leads the team in pressures (29), sacks (6.5), and interceptions (three) this season and could end up being a difference-maker, with more attention on Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Jaelan Phillips.

This might be the Eagles' toughest matchup of the season defensively, and they will need to be ready for anything because the 49ers will be firing on all cylinders on offense.
