Eagles (again) urged to trade backup that might not have as much value as expected

What can we get for him?

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is always open for business, but he will make sure he gets a good deal or walk away from the negotiating table.

Roseman was hellbent on getting a first-round pick from an A.J. Brown trade, and that is exactly what he got from the New England Patriots. The same thing applies to Eagles backup quarterback Tanner McKee, as he was a potential trade asset in the offseason with no one biting on it. Despite no deal getting done yet, Bleacher Report writer Moe Moton still believes the Eagles should trade McKee away.

"The Philadelphia Eagles may not be done making moves. Quarterback Tanner McKee isn't a headline name, but the Eagles have a high price on his trade value. According to ESPN's Rich Cimini (h/t Philly Voice's Jimmy Kempski), the New York Jets inquired about McKee's availability, and the Eagles demanded a second-round pick for him. Based on the Eagles' absurdly steep price for a quarterback who's started in two Week 18 games with backups, they would prefer to keep him around. That said, Philadelphia acquired Andy Dalton from the Carolina Panthers and selected Cole Payton in the fifth round of this year's draft. If the Eagles want to develop the rookie signal-caller behind Jalen Hurts and Dalton, they should drop their asking price for McKee to make a deal. Philadelphia may be able to get a fifth- or sixth-round pick for McKee, which is more than reasonable with his small-sample resume."

Should the Eagles still even consider trading Tanner McKee away?

Last season's Week 18 matchup against the Washington Commanders continues to haunt McKee and the Eagles, as he did not play as well as he would have liked to. He completed roughly 50% of his passes, threw a touchdown, and also threw a pick.

That led the NFL to question whether McKee is ready to compete for a starting job after a stellar 2024 season in relief of the injured Jalen Hurts and Kenny Pickett. The Jets said no to a second or third-round pick, and it appears that everyone else in the NFL is not interested in paying that kind of price.

It doesn't help that this week at Eagles OTAs, Dalton has been getting more backup snaps than McKee has. Dalton had a good workout in front of the media, while McKee leaves a lot to be desired early on in the process.

As the months roll on during the offseason, McKee's market value has continued to decline, to the point where Dalton might end up as the backup and McKee could be stuck in Philly for another season before free agency. At this point, Roseman might as well stick it out with McKee and have good depth at the most important position in football.
