With the recent news of Nolan Smith Jr.'s arrest, the Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher has just accelerated his chances of hitting the free agency highway once his contract expires in 2027.

The arrest further clouds an already murky big picture for Smith in Philadelphia, as the former first-round selection out of Georgia has flashed at times, but underwhelmed overall due to injuries and inconsistency. Yes, the talent is there, but the results have fallen short of expectations, and this recent news just doesn't bode well for his long-term prospects in midnight green.

Smith's arrest comes on the heels of a disappointing 2025 season, in which his triceps injury limited his production to just three sacks. Overall, the highly touted former Bulldog has registered 10.5 sacks in his first three seasons in Philadelphia. And while Smith excels against the run and has shown bursts of excellence as a pass rusher (four sacks in the team's 2024 post-season run), the reliability and consistency have been lacking.

Eagles might already have the future at edge with Jonathan Greenard and Jalyx Hunt

With the draft weekend move by general manager Howie Roseman to land Jonathan Greenard, the void left behind by Jaelan Phillips' departure for Carolina was deftly filled. Greenard was immediately inked to a four-year, $100 million contract with the Eagles and provides an invaluable veteran presence for this young defensive unit.

Along with Greenard, Smith, and Jalyx Hunt land atop the edge rotation, but it's Hunt who has proven to be the superior player up to this point in time. Not only from a production standpoint, but from a raw tools perspective and projected ceiling angle, all signs point to Hunt being the future at edge rusher.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio gushed about the third-year edge rusher, and the former smaller program safety turned pass-rushing force appears to be just scratching the surface of his vast potential. Following a tremendous effort in Super Bowl LIX, Hunt shined in his second season last year, pacing the team with 6.5 sacks and three interceptions (one pick-six), two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery for good measure.

With Roseman having exercised the fifth-year option on Smith's rookie deal, the edge is set to remain in Philadelphia through the 2027 season. But there are foundational pieces on the defense, including Jalen Carter and Cooper DeJean, both signed through 2027, as well as Quinyon Mitchell, 2028, who should take top priority over Smith.

When factoring in Hunt's rapid development, Greenard's arrival, and these other looming paydays for more productive defenders, it was already questionable to envision Smith sticking around past 2027. Throw in this most recent news, and plenty of signs point to Smith ending up somewhere else at the end of his current contract.
