With NFL teams beginning to report for training camp, NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks has begun to speculate which moves this offseason are giving each team an advantage in a conference championship. For the Philadelphia Eagles, despite winning the NFC East for the third time in four seasons, they have undergone a massive transformation both on the field and on the coaching staff.
One of those changes is Christian Parker, the new defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, who, after two seasons as the Eagles' passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach, is now in Texas leading his former rival's defense.
With Parker now in Dallas, Brooks believes that he is the key piece that could impact the NFC East and, ultimately, possibly dethrone the Eagles in the 2026 season.
"The Cowboys' spectacular offense is capable of fueling a Super Bowl run, but title contention won't become a reality without a vastly improved defense. Dallas' D cratered in 2025, ranking dead last in scoring defense with a franchise-record 511 points allowed. So, after hiring Parker from the Eagles, Dallas underwent a significant defensive makeover this offseason. The Cowboys traded forRashan Gary and scooped up first-round picks Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence in the draft, while also adding additional players to all three levels of the defense. Now, this D has the personnel to challenge opponents with a diversified pass rush and coverage plan that creates more playmaking chances. As a talented teacher who has worked under Vic Fangio and Vance Joseph, Parker will mix and match tactics to showcase his players. Most importantly, he will stress fundamentals and focus on eliminating some of the missed assignments and blown coverages that led to the unit's demise in 2025. It might take some time for the new defensive coordinator to adjust to his role and personnel, but eventually, the Cowboys' improved talent and Parker's coaching should help make America's Team a formidable foe this season."
Christian Parker could affect Eagles' chances of winning NFC East three straight years
The Cowboys should be one of the NFL's more competent offenses under the leadership of QB Dak Prescott and head coach Brian Schottenheimer; however, the Cowboys' defense will be under plenty of scrutiny after an underwhelming 2025 campaign post-Micah Parsons.
The Cowboys' defense in 2025 was dead-last in scoring, giving up 511 points over 17 games, which is now a franchise record, ultimately leading to the termination of 2025 defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. With the hiring of Parker, the Cowboys not only get the insight of someone who's worked inside the division (and the NFC) but also a student of one of the NFL's best defensive minds, Vic Fangio.
With the addition of Parker calling the shots, in addition to trading for edge rusher Rashan Gary, along with drafting Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence, the Cowboys upgraded at all three levels of their defense, which should see massive improvements in 2026.
While the transition to Dallas should improve the Cowboys' defense in 2026, with the Eagles essentially doing the same thing on offense, Philadelphia should remain the favorite to earn its third consecutive NFC East title under the guidance of offensive coordinator Sean Mannion and quarterback Jalen Hurts.

The Eagles and Cowboys are scheduled to take on each other in Week 7 at Lincoln Financial Field and on Thanksgiving Day at AT&T Stadium for their scheduled two matchups this season.
