This is not the way the Philadelphia Eagles would like to start Day 1 of training camp.

It was announced that the Eagles are placing their new edge rusher, Jonathan Greenard, on the PUP list to start training camp due to a pectoral injury. Multiple Eagles reporters said Greenard sustained the injury while working out, but it is not expected to be too serious. Greenard should be back soon.

The Eagles traded for Greenard during the 2026 NFL Draft with the Minnesota Vikings. Philly had to surrender two third-round picks to acquire him.

Injuries cost Greenard the last month of the regular season with the Vikings last year. He finished the year with just three sacks, but had 24.5 sacks combined in the previous two seasons.

The Eagles would love to have Greenard on the practice field at the start of training camp, but that won't happen. This team is needed since he is learning defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's scheme and could use the reps.

Philly will turn to Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith to be the starters for the time being. The Eagles have plenty of depth at edge rusher, though, with Arnold Ebiketie and A.J. Epenesa ready to step in as well if they are needed.

Greenard is going to play a key role in this defense for a long time after signing a four-year, $100 million contract extension with the Eagles after the trade happened. He will be a focal point for the team in getting the kind of pass rush they need.

Last year, the Eagles struggled with pressuring the quarterback until they traded for Jaelan Phillips. The arrival of Phillips completely flipped the whole season for the Eagles. Hunt and Smith were not enough in the first half of the year to get the job done, which is why Greenard is on the team now.

It's only the beginning of training camp, so there's no reason to panic, but it's not exactly the best way to start.
