Another day, another Howie Roseman magic trick with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Roseman finally secured a contract extension agreed upon with defensive tackle Jalen Carter. The new deal is a four-year, $152 million contract that can be worth up to $160 million. Carter is getting $106 million guaranteed as part of the contract.
This is a historical deal as it is the largest defensive tackle contract in NFL history. While Carter should be happy with getting $38 million per year, Roseman might be even happier, as he has been praised by everyone for the agreement.

While appearing on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," former Eagles consultant Andrew Brandt discussed how his friend secured Carter's contract. Brandt shared the secret to Roseman's success with these contracts.
"Howie's one of those rare GMs that's a cap guy. So usually GMs in the NFL come from the scouting background. They were scouts. They were bird-dogging players their whole career up until then. But Howie's one of the rare ones that comes from the financial cap business contract background, and you can see it in the contracts. Without getting too technical, he is doing things in these contracts that are continuing to push the envelope for the Eagles, things like future options. So this deal will have a bonus, pretty big number, but then it'll be a future option. If you exercise it, you push out more bonus proration. He'll probably have dummy years that are void years, but they're there for cap purposes only."
While it isn't known yet, Eagles fans know all too well that there is probably going to be a lot of voided years on Carter's contract. Roseman has a way to ensure there is a year in the contract when he can have an out. He has also done a great job of manipulating a contract to have the salary cap situation, nonetheless.
The guaranteed contract money is also a big factor to consider, as it will relieve pressure on the Eagles when trying to get a deal done. It will, again, help them with the salary cap years down the road.
Remember, Roseman has to think three steps ahead when getting these deals done. He is trying to get them agreed upon quickly, so the Eagles don't have to spend more money next offseason. Also, it helps him figure out how to pay for other big-name players on the team.
The Eagles will have to give new contract extensions to multiple players in the future. Guys like Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, DeVonta Smith, Jalen Hurts, Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith, Tyler Steen, and more will eventually need to be decided whether to give them extensions or let them walk.

This is why Roseman gets the big bucks as the general manager to make sure the Eagles are set up for success. He may be great at finding hidden talent, but he's even better at being a salary cap wizard.
