It turns out the 'Red Rifle', Andy Dalton, is anything but a sure shot to make the 53-man roster of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Multiple reports painted the picture of a veteran QB failing to deliver in OTA's, with the likelihood of Dalton eventually suiting up on game days far from set in stone. Bleeding Green Nation Eagles reporter Brandon Lee Gowton chimed in on the lackluster performance of the 16-year vet.
"The 38-year-old passer was Jalen Hurts’ primary backup in three of their four media-attended practices. . But even on his best day, Dalton’s lacking arm strength was apparent as he barely completed some out routes that were tightly contested by defenders. And aside from that one day, Dalton struggled. Inaccurate passes were an issue and he threw multiple interceptions. If the Eagles determine QB2 based on merit (as opposed to experience), Dalton is on track to lose to Tanner McKee. And if Dalton isn’t the Eagles’ backup, does he even make the roster? Are they going to risk cutting Cole Payton? Or using an extra roster spot to keep four quarterbacks?"
Rocky start hasn't gotten any smoother for Andy Dalton
Originally acquired back in March by general manager Howie Roseman for a seventh-round pick, the move was viewed as a bit of a headscratcher by fans and media pundits alike. With the promising Tanner McKee already backing up Jalen Hurts, Dalton arrived amid rumors that McKee might be moved, but those rumors have not materialized. Add in the arrival of rookie Cole Payton, and Dalton looks like he could be the odd man out when all is said and done.
Early indications from camp portrayed a shaky start in Philadelphia for Dalton, and the vet hasn't done much to change that narrative. Sports Radio 94 WIP Eagles reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks also shared his take on the Dalton situation.
"Even though there is a QB competition at backup QB I could see Andy Dalton landing on the practice squad. More likely to be cut and put on the PS than McKee or Payton."

With 16 years of NFL experience under his belt, Dalton most recently suited up for the Carolina Panthers. In three seasons there, he threw for 10 touchdowns against seven interceptions, serving primarily as Bryce Young's backup.

Of course, his early years in the league saw the former TCU standout shine in Cincinnati, but those days are quite a way back in the rearview mirror. Stints in Chicago and New Orleans followed his tenure as a Bengal, with his strongest recent season coming in 2022, when he threw for 2,871 yards, with 18 touchdown passes, 9 interceptions, and a QB rating of 95.2.
