Eagles OTAs show veteran backup's stock taking a tumble for the worse

Oh man it's getting bad now...

It's the first day of mandatory OTAs for the Philadelphia Eagles, so it might be too early to slam on the panic button, but wow, one player certainly had it rougher than the others.

The Eagles currently have an interesting backup position battle going on at quarterback between Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee, but what's been interesting is that Dalton has been taking the lead at the QB2 job through over two weeks at OTAs. Bleeding Green Nation Eagles reporter Brandon Lee Gowton documented Dalton's first day of mandatory OTAs, and let's just say it was a day to forget.

"Jeremiah Trotter Jr. nearly picked an Andy Dalton throw to the flat. Dalton was intercepted by Jalyx Hunt earlier. Also just nearly picked by Tariq Castro-Fields as I was typing this."

Did Andy Dalton open the door back up for Tanner McKee to get his job back?

This was a much different report from last week, as Dalton had a solid day at the one open practice to the media at voluntary OTAs. It led many to wonder whether the veteran quarterback would end up as Jalen Hurts's backup in Week 1.

McKee was the backup last year, and many thought that he would be traded this offseason for a team that needs a quarterback to push for a starting job. It turns out the Eagles were asking too high a price with the second or third round pick, so they are hanging on to him.

Things are now in a different spot after Dalton's rough day at the office, as the Eagles could be looking at both him and McKee closely as QB2. One day shouldn't determine if someone loses their job, of course, but it should be enough to at least start giving McKee more snaps with the backups to see if they have something with him instead.

Nothing will be determined until training camp, but as the weeks roll on with OTAs, the Eagles' backup quarterback questions will continue to grow.
