Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Sean Mannion finally got the green light to talk to the media for the first time since the team hired him back in January.
There were a lot of stories that came out during the offensive coordinator interview process, with candidates dropping left and right, but Mannion not only proved to be one of the finalists but also got the job. Mannion opened up about how the process went with the Eagles during his interview.
"I was at the East-West Shrine game and got an interview virtually and I felt like we just really hit it off right away," Mannion said via Sports Illustrated's John McMullen. "I felt great about the football conversations and getting to connect with Nick [Sirianni], Howie [Roseman], and Mr. Lurie and all the people involved. There's a lot of people involved on the interview and things like that. From there, [I] came in here for an in-person interview, and again, it was just even more validating, getting to be in the building and getting to have further discussion. It came together kind of from there and felt like it was a great fit, great fit for me, great fit for my family, great fit just in terms of the football side of things here, and yeah, [I'm] really excited. In terms of being ready for it, I think I lean on all my experiences."
Sean Mannion shared more about the interview process with Eagles
There were a lot of candidates that came through the doors for the Eagles, and no one within the fan base knew what the team was thinking. Originally, it was believed that the team was looking for an offensive coordinator with play-calling experience, but decided to take a chance on Mannion.
It's a massive risk, especially since he has only been a coach for two years, and both years were working with the quarterbacks in Green Bay with the Packers. In that East-West Shrine game, he got his first chance to call the plays, so technically, he is rolling in with some kind of experience.
At least the good part is that throughout the offseason, Mannion has received praise from many coaches and players for how his mind works. He's bringing in a new offensive scheme like Sean McVay's and Kyle Shanahan's, so he is bringing the modern offensive game to Philly.
