Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is a man of many talents, but when it comes to negotiating player contracts, there might not be anyone better in the NFL.
Roseman is also pretty good at trades, as he acquired edge rusher Jonathan Greenard and a seventh-round pick from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for two second-round picks. Greenard and the Eagles then agreed on a four-year, $100 million contract extension.
The Athletic's Zach Berman shared details about the contract extension, including some interesting notes.
"Jonathan Greenard's new contract registers as a two-year contract extension with $60M in new money and $50M in total guarantees, per overthecap. It's a 4-year deal for the Eagles with 4 additional void years, and the Eagles could get out of the deal without major dead money hits and with some cap savings before the 3rd/4th years. Greenard's cap number in 2026 will be $6.278M."

Jonathan Greenard's contract extension is team friendly thanks to Howie Roseman
Roseman is the master of utilizing void years, as he has done it on pretty much every contract this offseason to help take some pressure off the cap hit. This will also help with the future dead cap associated with the contract.
The interesting part is how the Eagles could be out on Greenard's contract by the third year with little to no dead cap effect. This has to be because of the contract they had with A.J. Brown and the trouble they are having with it right now.
Greenard has a history of injuries and missed time, as he's only played a full season once, so the Eagles want to have some insurance in case it doesn't work out for him. Philly has been burned by it in the past, and Roseman is smart to protect what is best for the franchise.

Eagles fans should be grateful for Roseman and the work he does with these contracts, and for helping set up the future of the franchise. Let's hope it works out with Greenard being a star on the team.
