If Philadelphia Eagles fans thought Jalen Carter's record-setting contract extension was expensive, they have no idea what's about to come.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon agreed to a four-year, $132 million contract extension. $101 million was guaranteed, making the contract the most expensive cornerback deal in NFL history.
Last season, Witherspoon made his third straight Pro Bowl appearance and was selected as a second-team All-Pro. That will certainly pique the interest of Eagles All-Pro cornerback Quinyon Mitchell.
Eagles better be ready to pay Quinyon Mitchell a lot of money next offseason
Mitchell has been one of the top lockdown cornerbacks in the NFL over the last two years since being the Eagles' first-round pick in 2024. Last year, Mitchell was a Pro Bowler and All-Pro after posting 45 tackles, 17 pass deflections, and one fumble recovery in 16 games. He also allowed a completion percentage of 44.3% and a passer rating of 64.3.
NFL players seem to agree that Mitchell is one of the best players in the NFL, ranking him 47th in the top 100 players in the league. He has been included on multiple lists as a top-five cornerback in the NFL entering the 2026 season.
The Eagles had to pay Carter $38 million per year, up from the previous high of $35 million per year. With Witherspoon getting $33 million per year, it's easy to imagine what is coming up for Philly.
One major decision next offseason will be what to do about Mitchell and his contract. They will first have to pick up his fifth-year option on his rookie contract. After that, they'll have to talk about a contract extension.
If Mitchell matches the same kind of performance he had in 2025, the Eagles are going to have to reset the market at cornerback. Mitchell could be looking at a new deal between $35 million and $40 million per year.
Part of the issue is also what to do about fellow All-Pro cornerback Cooper DeJean. He enters his final season on his rookie contract in 2027. That means the Eagles are going to have to figure out how to pay him like one of the best corners in the NFL as well.

The Eagles have no choice but to pay Mitchell, as he is a one-of-a-kind cornerback who can't be messed with. That decision, though, could affect DeJean's future and how the Eagles manage their finances with other players. Let's hope general manager Howie Roseman can work his void-years magic to make it all happen.
