The NFL Honors award show has come and gone, with few Philadelphia Eagles fans keeping a close eye on it, aside from defensive coordinator Vic Fangio being up for Assistant Coach of the Year.
Expectations for Fangio winning the award were pretty low, as many thought it might go to someone like Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. It turns out that the award went to New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
Fangio was nominated for the award for the second straight season and won it in 2018 as the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator. It's now two years in a row that he has lost the award.
Vic Fangio loses out on Assistant Coach of the Year
If there is a silver lining to it all, Fangio can at least try to go for the award one more time in 2026. There were rumors that he was going to retire before the Eagles brass convinced him to come back for another season.
While the 2025 season was not his best statistically as a defensive coordinator, it could be argued that it was just as impressive a job as in 2024. The Eagles struggled to produce a pass rusher at the beginning of the season, but with Fangio's advice, Philly traded for Jaelan Phillips, and that turned it all around for the Eagles.
Through the 17-game season, Fangio's unit finished 13th in yards and fifth in points as the team went 11-6 and won the NFC East. It didn't end in any playoff wins, but the Eagles' end of the season was impressive as they allowed 15.5 points per game in the last nine regular season games, and no opponent scored over 24 points in that stretch.

Fangio will return for the 2026 season in what could be his final season in coaching, so he'll not only get one more shot at winning the award, but one last shot at winning a Super Bowl.
