It has not been an easy time for Philadelphia Eagles fans as they try to navigate every negative news story possible, but they finally get some good news.
The Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane reported that Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is indeed going to come back for the 2026 season in the same role. Just a few days ago, PHLY's E.J. Smith reported the same news, so getting the double confirmation should make Eagles fans feel a lot better about the situation.
Reports indicated that Fangio was going to retire after the 2025 season, but the Eagles had to talk him into staying at least one more season. Fangio has been with the organization for the past two years, helping them win a Super Bowl, and he has been nominated for Assistant Coach of the Year twice in that span.
Eagles fans now know for sure Vic Fangio is back for 2026
Philly's offseason has certainly been a roller coaster of emotions for the fan base. From the reports about A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts to the chaotic offensive coordinator search. It was topped off by Fangio's near retirement and longtime offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland deciding to depart from the Eagles after 13 years.
Fangio's return at least provides the franchise with some stability as they undergo a major overhaul of the offensive coaching staff. The Eagles already lost Christian Parker on the defensive staff and couldn't afford to lose Fangio as well.
This upcoming 2026 season, though, should have the Eagles starting to have the conversation about what the plan is when Fangio retires. It seems like a real possibility that this could be his last season, and Philly needs to know who will replace him on the staff.
The current staff has some solid options between defensive line coach Clint Hurtt and defensive backs coach Joe Kasper, which could give Philly something to work with. It would be a risk for them to wait to see what is on the outside for a defensive coordinator, not knowing who will be available.

With everything going on with the Eagles and the chaos surrounding it, the fan base knows the defense will be intact thanks to Fangio. Now all eyes are on new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion and how he can get this unit back on track with what seems like a completely new staff.
