After a nice three-year run with the Philadelphia Eagles, it appears as though one of the Eagles' most versatile players won't be back on the roster for the 2026 season.
The Athletic's Zach Berman reported that fullback/linebacker Ben VanSumeren did not receive a qualifying offer from the Eagles, making him an unrestricted free agent. VanSumeren went undrafted, starting as a linebacker before moving to fullback.
Last season, VanSumeren only played the first opening kickoff of the 2025 season against the Dallas Cowboys before suffering a patellar tendon tear. He was shortly afterward placed on IR and was ruled out for the rest of the season.
Eagles move on from Ben VanSumeren
VanSumeren was an interesting piece to the Eagles' roster as he kind of did it all for them, from linebacker to fullback to special teams. He racked up 16 tackles and made one catch in his three seasons with the team.
There was always an idea that VanSumeren might not be on the team with Cameron Latu taking over his spot as the fullback and on special teams, despite the fact that his main job is being a tight end. Latu became the Eagles' top special teams player last season, emerging as a weapon for Philly.
The Eagles have had good experiences with undrafted players performing well for them. VanSumeren is one example, with Reed Blankenship probably the best, as he just signed a nice contract with the Houston Texans in free agency.
Since VanSumeren has such a niche skill set, he is intriguing for any NFL team to consider adding to their roster. He won't command a ton of money, but there will be teams that will give him some serious looks.

VanSumeren was a nice piece to the Eagles that did well over the last three years, but should find success elsewhere if Philly doesn't decide to bring him back.
