Philly sports radio host is hitting panic button on Jalen Hurts (but should he?)

"For the first time since 2020 the Eagles have a QB problem."

That's what Joe Giglio of SportsRadio 94 WIP thinks about the state of the signal-caller for the 2025 Philadelphia Eagles. After a five-turnover performance in the Eagles' 22-19 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14, fans and media are ready for a change at quarterback, with Jalen Hurts being at fault for the Eagles' struggles.

"I can't beat around the bush, I can't do the pretend thing, I can't let's blame six different people, you guys can do that," Giglio said. "I'm just going to say what the obvious is."

Giglio makes this claim after five and a half seasons of Hurts at the helm for Philadelphia since taking over for Carson Wentz. While Hurts is fresh off a Super Bowl victory in February, his second appearance, the 2020 second-round pick has been criticized in the past for being a game manager rather than a game-changer.

Should Eagles fans change course on Jalen Hurts so soon?

While many could say that, given Hurts' recent performance, these are emotionally charged statements, the Eagles' struggles over the past month don't help instill much confidence for the rest of the season.

Hurts' "downfall" shouldn't surprise Eagles fans, as the team has done a pretty decent job of transitioning "franchise quarterbacks" to the bench in favor of their backup quarterbacks. Since the Donovan McNabb era, the Eagles have had no problem "moving on" from "large" quarterback contracts, often trading them whenever the opportunity arises.

The Eagles traded McNabb, with a year remaining on his contract, in 2010, and signed Michael Vick to a five-year $80 million contract, which was never completed. Nick Foles was traded in the final year of his rookie contract to the Rams in 2015 for Sam Bradford, who, in turn, was traded after signing a two-year extension to the Vikings after the drafting of Carson Wentz, who, in turn, was traded in 2021 (after an extension) in favor of Hurts.

While Giglio states that the Eagles have a quarterback problem for the first time since 2020, one could argue that this is the organization's status quo. Based on the history of the team, it's only inevitable that the calls for Tanner McKee will continue to get louder if Hurts can't rebound. Despite what Hurts has done in the past, it seemingly doesn't matter because in the NFL, especially in Philadelphia, it comes down to what have you done for me lately.

With Hurts, it's a lost ballgame that resulted in one of the worst performances of this season.
