Sitting at 2-6 through eight weeks in the regular season, Philadelphia Eagles fans are thoroughly fed up with head coach Nick Sirianni, but should they be?
No real glimmer of hope remains. The Eagles have shown this with a miserable six-game losing streak and now sit at the bottom of the NFC East.
At this point, they appear to be pretty much out of the playoff hunt. In fact, NBC says they have only a 2% chance of making the postseason after their 27-10 Week 8 loss to the Washington Commanders.
All the blame has been placed on Sirianni for his work with the franchise so far this season. While he definitely needs to be held accountable for the ugly turn this season has taken, pushing him out after the 2026 season may not be the best move.
Not everything can be pinned on Nick Sirianni for Eagles' disastrous 2026 season
Sirianni has had one of the best starts for a head coach in NFL history, posting a 61-32 overall record and a 65.6% winning percentage. He has made the playoffs five years in a row, never had a losing record, appeared in the Super Bowl twice, and won one.
Winning has been a part of Sirianni's DNA since joining the franchise in 2021. Even when they started 2-5 in his first year, the Eagles found a way to turn things around and reach the postseason at 9-8.
Everyone can agree that although Sirianni has been a great head coach over the first five years of his tenure with the Eagles, the 2026 season is by far his worst. There have been some truly boneheaded coaching decisions, along with decisions he made regarding coaching hires (Sean Mannion).
That said, let's not ignore the many other things that have gone wrong this season. Injuries have brutally ruined this franchise. Top players like Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, Jonathan Greenard, and many more have lost time to injuries. Not to mention the five million running backs this team has lost, with four going on IR at one point this season.
Sirianni may have been a key figure in hiring Mannion, but the first-year offensive coordinator needs his fair share of the blame. The lack of creativity and his conservatism have made this once-explosive offense look even more boring than it did with Kevin Patullo in 2025.
Speaking of the guys who helped hire Mannion: general manager Howie Roseman, ladies and gentlemen. Philly gave up two third-round picks so edge rusher Jonathan Greenard could get five pressures and zero sacks in five games. Tight end Johnny Mundt didn't even come close to living up to expectations and isn't a great blocking tight end. Honestly, Roseman made few moves in the 2026 offseason and regular season that worked, except for getting a 2028 second-round pick from the Cam Jurgens trade and a 2028 first-round pick from the A.J. Brown trade; at least those worked out.
What Nick Sirianni could bring to the table in 2027 for the Eagles
Firing Sirianni might be a bit rash, especially looking at his success. We are looking at one bad season out of the five he had before 2026. Firing a coach after having the first bad year is a really bad look.
What kind of message would that send to head coach candidates if they did that to Sirianni? This franchise already struggles to hire an offensive coordinator after firing two since 2023.
Eagles fans may not like it, but Sirianni has earned the right to redeem himself. He's been too good a coach for this franchise to be thrown out like trash after one bad year. Sirianni has proven to be resilient and bounced back after bad moments.
People might paint him as someone who "doesn't do anything," but the players always seem to support him. Sirianni always takes the heat for his team and keeps it together, even when they are dealing with a prima donna like A.J. Brown.

Everyone has the right to be mad at Sirianni for the 2026 season, but he deserves one chance to prove that he can get the job done. If it doesn't work out in 2027 either, then yes, move on from him. Until then, he should get his shot to redeem himself.
