Eagles make a swift decision on James Bradberry, announce subsequent roster move
One man goes down. Another man enjoys a comes up. That's the nature of the ultra-competitive NFL. Those are two thoughts on the minds of the Philadelphia Eagles' leadership structure.
News came on Thursday of James Bradberry's release. He's expected to miss six to eight weeks. As expected, he'll head to the injured reserve.
Seeing that happen will mean a roster spot is open. It didn't take long for Philly to fill it, and they looked to the newly-formed practice squad to help them do so.
The Eagles promote Oren Burks to their active roster following James Bradberry's injury.
It sounds crass, but there's no time to weep whenever injuries are announced. The words 'next-man-up' have been ingrained in our subconscious so often that it almost seems second nature to say the words.
With James Bradberry's transition to the IR, linebacker Oren Burks learns he has been promoted. He's now on the 53-man roster, giving the Eagles another player on the regular-season depth chart at the linebacker position. The spot he vacates on the scout team has been filled by offensive lineman Brett Toth.
We exclude outside guys and pass rushers on this list. That leaves us with Nakobe Dean, Devin White, Zack Baun, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Ben Vansumeren, and Mr. Burks. Oren saw a decent amount of playing time in the preseason finale. He notched seven total tackles including one for a loss of yardage and a sack.
Our human portion still tells us we must state we're pulling for James Bradberry. Our hope is a full recovery comes more swiftly than the timetable expects. In the meantime, Burks gives the Eagles another veteran and special teams ace. There's a lot of talent here. Keep an eye on him as things continue progressing forward.
