We imagine, somewhere, that there must be an NFL general manager who strives as hard as Howie Roseman works for his Philadelphia Eagles. There's just one thing. We can't think of one off the tops of or heads. Can you?

He's always turning over every stone and constantly working the phones to improve Philly's roster. Howie has developed a reputation for being as shrewd as they come.

Just two days after the Birds introduced their initial 53-man roster and a day after the practice squad was announced, Howie has made another move. The Eagles add more beef to the interior of the defensive line.

The Philadelphia Eagles claim defensive tackle Byron Young off waivers.

There has been talk that the Eagles are short on offensive talent following the release of the first regular-season roster. Three tailbacks... Five wide receivers... Nine offensive linemen and no backup center... It's easy to understand why.

We've long known the business model for roster-building. It has been the same since Andy Reid paced the sidelines, and it hasn't mattered who the defensive coordinator was.

Philly likes to build from the trenches and work their way out. Despite already having six defensive tackles on the roster and another on the practice squad, the Birds have decided to continue adding to that cupboard.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports they have claimed another off waivers. This one is Byron Young, a former third-rounder drafted just last year by the Las Vegas Raiders, not to be confused with LA Rams linebacker Byron Young. Marlon Tuipulotu has been released in a subsequent move.

Philly later made the news official.

This isn't a slam-dunk addition. It's concerning that the Raiders gave up on him after one season.

There has also been talk that Young hasn't had a good summer, that his training camp and preseason left much to be desired, so how is it then that he'll be a good signing for Philly?

He played 99 snaps over six games in 2023 as a rookie. That resulted in four solo tackles. That isn't encouraging, but handing him Clint Hurtt as a position coach gives us reason to hope.

He will be added to a room that already features Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Thomas Booker IV, Moro Ojomo, Milton Williams, and Gabe Hall. That gives us cause to smile. Let's hope the change of scenery and new locker room culture lights a fire under him.
