Eagles whose stock is falling following Philly's Week 1 win over the Packers
Though we probably won't be hosting any conferences on stock options, we have always enjoyed the conversations. It's just one of those things that we'e into. Maybe digging through so many Philadelphia Eagles stats just made us a fan of numbers. Maybe maturity just made us conscious of nest eggs.
Whatever the case, Here's what we found out. We're far from being experts, and we're still learning. Then again, that's all part of the fun.
Sometimes, you can watch trends, and all of them make sense. Sometimes, what you're looking at makes zero sense.
So, how about this? We'll get some practice in, We recently discussed several Eagles with soaring stock after Week 1. Here are a handful of guys trending in the wrong direction.
We certainly need to see more from these guys next week.
Cam Jurgens, center
It didn't take long for Birds fans to bring Jason Kelce up in Week 1. Second drive... A bad snap from Cam Jurgens got the ball rolling.
Comparing a third-year player to a future Pro Football Hall of Famer seems unfair, but no one will show any sympathy. This is the NFL.
There wasn't enough push on one Brotherly Shove. There was a bad snap on another. If memory serves correctly, which we believe it does, he was also guilty of an illegal man downfield penalty. Yeah, we've certainly noticed the G.O.A.T.'s absence.
Cam is going to be a good football player for a long time. He isn't above reproach though. He has room for growth after Week 1's performance. There is however a lot of talent that can be molded here.
Nolan Smith & Bryce Huff, EDGE
Raise your hand if, at some point during Week 1's game, you asked where these guys were. Don't worry. You aren't alone in that regard.
Nolan Smith and Bryce Huff combined for three tackles versus the Packers. That's it in terms of denting the stat sheet.
Brandon Graham's 32 defensive snaps were more than both saw. Nolan Smith was given 31. Huff received 30.
Neither Smith nor Huff registered a sack. They didn't contact the opposing QB or register a tackle for loss. They didn't knock a pass down. That's unacceptable for two guys this defense expects more from.
Avonte Maddox, cornerback
Avonte Maddox was a liability in coverage in Week 1. If this continues, we'll see Cooper DeJean sooner than expected. The former Iowa star saw six snaps on Friday.
Maddox has cross-trained at safety. He's also Philly's most experienced slot cornerback, but the Packers showed little fear in the opener.
They attacked Maddox frequently. On one occasion, they lined a bigger body across from him, and as expected, Christian Watson beat Avonte for a touchdown.
Coop will take his lumps too when he's finally given more responsibility. It may be a good idea to move Maddox to the safety position permanently.
Vic Fangio, defensive coordinator
We saw much to like from the Eagles' defense. Those early stops after the turnovers helped keep Philly in the game. Quinyon Mitchell's debut was certainly a solid one.
Still, Week 1 produced more questions than answers about Vic Fangio's defensive scheme. Most need immediate answers, or we're certain to hear concern.
Where's the pass rush going to come from? Did anyone notice Zack Baun registered the only two sacks? Where in the heck are Nolan Smith and Bryce Huff?
Fangio is a brilliant defensive mind. It's for that reason that surrendering 29 points is unacceptable. His unit will certainly be under the microscope next week.
